Introduction

Welcome to Platon's AWS Accounts page! Here, you will find information about how to obtain and use AWS accounts provided by Platon. These accounts are designed to help teams manage the infrastructure of their applications using AWS services or complement their PaaS solution with additional services found in the AWS portfolio.

What are AWS Accounts?

AWS accounts are cloud-based accounts that allow users to access and use a wide range of AWS services. AWS is short for "Amazon Web Services". These services include compute, storage, database, and networking services, among others. AWS accounts are designed to be flexible and scalable, allowing users to easily manage their infrastructure and resources.

How can AWS Accounts be used?

Platon offers readily setup AWS accounts to other teams that can be used with a great deal of freedom. These accounts can be used in two ways:

  1. To manage infrastructure: Teams can use AWS accounts to manage the infrastructure of their applications themselves using AWS services. This allows teams to have more control over their infrastructure and resources and/or follow different architectures than the PaaS-runtime, such as serverless applications.

  2. To complement PaaS solutions: Teams can also use AWS accounts to complement their PaaS application with additional services found in the AWS portfolio. For example, teams can use DynamoDB databases to store and manage data for their applications.

Please note:

Teams have great freedom in how they use their AWS accounts, but it's important to remember that "with great power comes great responsibility" 🕷️ This means that teams are responsible for what is deployed to their respective accounts, including both code and configuration. It's the team's responsibility to ensure that the resources and applications are secured and work efficiently. This responsibility extends to third-party libraries and stack examples.

Prerequisites

Before using Sikt's AWS accounts, it's important that at least one team member has knowledge about AWS and how to provision and configure infrastructure. This team member should have experience with deploying and managing applications on AWS.

If your team does not have this knowledge, we recommend taking the Developing on AWS course offered by AWS. This course provides an introduction to AWS services and teaches you how to develop, deploy, and manage applications on AWS. It covers topics such as AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM), Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3), and Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS).

In addition to AWS knowledge, developers should also be familiar with Sikt's principles of running services on AWS:

Support

The Platon team is here to support you in setting up and using your AWS accounts. We offer the following support:

  • Account setup: We will set up your AWS account and incorporate it into the Sikt organization structure. This includes setting up security tools like GuardDuty and giving access via Feide.

  • Discussion partner: We can act as a discussion partner on things like architecture, security, and configuration. We can provide guidance and best practices for using AWS services effectively and efficiently.

  • Examples and templates: While we will NOT act as a DevOps or Ops team for your account, we can provide examples, templates, or point to resources that can help you create your own AWS services and deploy to them. Platon will not deliver ready-to-use parts of the deployment stack.

It's important to note that while we can provide support and guidance, it's ultimately the team's responsibility to manage their AWS account and resources. This includes deploying and managing applications, monitoring resources, and ensuring that security best practices are followed.

If you have any questions or need support with your AWS account, please don't hesitate to reach out to the Platon team. We are here to help you succeed on AWS!
