Zabbix

Zabbix is the primary monitoring system provided by Platon. Teams use it to see the health of their hosts and services, acknowledge problems, silence alerts during planned work, and control how they are notified.

Logging in​

Sign in at zabbix.uninett.no using Sikt SSO (Entra ID).

If you don't have access yet, send a request to Sikt's internal help mail address with your name, Sikt account, and which hosts or host groups you need to see.

Viewing your problems​

Monitoring → Problems lists currently firing triggers. Filter by host group to scope the view to your services.

If hosts you expected aren't visible, your user group may not have access to the relevant host group — ask Platon to extend your permissions.

Acknowledging a problem​

When you've seen a problem and are handling it (or know it's a known issue), acknowledge it so others can see it's being looked at:

  1. Click the problem row in Monitoring → Problems
  2. Click Acknowledge
  3. Add a comment describing what's happening
  4. Optionally change the severity, suppress further notifications, or close the problem manually

Acknowledgements are visible to everyone with access to the host.

Maintenance windows​

To silence alerts for hosts during planned work (reboots, migrations, deploys), create a maintenance period under Data collection → Maintenance:

  • Pick the host or host group
  • Set the time window
  • Choose "No data collection" or "With data collection" depending on whether Zabbix should keep recording metrics during the window

You need write access to the host group to create a maintenance window for it.

Notifications​

How you get notified is controlled by the media types on your user. Open your user profile (top-right user icon) and go to the Media tab to add or change your email address.

Configuring your hosts and services​

With the right permissions you can add hosts, link templates, and create web scenarios yourself. See Configuring Zabbix entities (Sikt-internal) for the how-to guides.

If you need write access on a host group, a new host group or template, or anything else that requires admin rights, send a request to Sikt's internal help mail address.

Forwarding Prometheus alerts to Zabbix​

PrometheusRules can route to Zabbix via Alertmanager. See Prometheus alerting rules for the label and annotation setup.
